Longest Night Service ( Blue Christmas)
Thursday, December 21st at 7:00 PM
Trinity UCC in Rehrersburg
Dec. 21st is the longest night of the year- ( at least around here) when darkness sticks around maybe longer than we hope.
For many people and for a variety of reasons- whether every year or this year in particular: these times are not festive, joyous or even hopeful. Recent or anniversary losses of family or friends, long term or recent unemployment of health conditions ( mental, emotional and physical ones) , even the conditions of the nation and world have taken their toll. Their waiting seems forever.
All the folly and festivities, the bright lights, decorations, songs and shopping is something that does not resonate or reflect their current reality. They feel worse , or isolated during this time of year and struggle to participate. This is not about a lack of faith in God or a need or desire for Christ. This service is designed to give them a chance to worship without all the bells and whistles. And that they can do so with a community that is understanding that for them, they feel their only companion is the dark gloom they feel.
This service is about God loving and meeting them where they are, and inviting the rest of us to join them. The service is a bit more reflective, solemn, prayerful and acknowledging while still being a celebration and acknowledgment of God’s work and gift in Christ.
It is open to the whole community whether someone has a need or desire for such a worship service would choose to offer them fellowship in community as solidarity, all are welcome.
