Berks Heim Nursing & Rehabilitation Chaplaincy

The Reading Berks Conference of Churches established Chaplaincy at Berks Heim in 1952. The relationship has continued, non-stop, in partnership with the County of Berks.

Chaplains emphasize the individual need of each Resident at Berks Heim to be ministered to according to their particular faith. Our chaplains are trained to meet every individual Resident’s spiritual needs in conjunction with their home church’s denominational practices. Chaplains desire to work as closely as possible with each Resident’s home church, so as to enhance what is already being done for them. If a particular resident does not have a “home” or “family” church, our Chaplains, who are licensed and ordained ministers and are CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) certified, have the resources to provide for their spiritual needs.

The Chaplaincy Department at Berks Heim provides a Devotional Service in the Chapel every Tuesday morning, with communion being offered every first Tuesday of the month. There is also a Resident Chorus who leads worship time on Communion Tuesday. In addition to Chapel services there are several Hymn Sing/Bible Devotions which are offered in the Day Room common area on each unit throughout the week.

There are a variety of Denominational Ministers and Lay-Ministers who volunteer their time to lead Sunday afternoon Protestant Services, as well as having Catholic Priests and Lay-Ministers for the Catholic Resident’s services every Sunday morning. Catholic Mass is also offered every second Thursday afternoon. Communion is offered to those residents who are unable to attend the regular services in the Chapel.

The Chaplain’s main focus is to offer one-on-one Pastoral Visits to every resident who is open to receive them. There is interaction with every Resident at Berks Heim, as well as offering individualized care and spiritual encouragement. Along with the expert personal care by Berks Heim Staff, the residents are presented with a well rounded approach to their whole health well-being. Each resident is treated with love, respect, and dignity in their home away from home. The Residents at Berks Heim Nursing and Rehabilitation are treated as extended family and are our first priority. The Chaplains feel extremely blessed to have the honor and privilege to attend to their particular spiritual needs.

Volunteers are always needed and welcomed. If you who have an interest in serving the elder community here at Berks Heim Nursing and Rehabilitation; by helping transport them to and from their living to the Chapel for our Tuesday morning Devotional Services, please contact the Supervising Chaplain, Rev. Kerry L. Hicks at 610 376-4841 ext. 7421. A volunteer application form is required, and can be obtained from Ann Gilmer, the Berks Heim Volunteer Department Supervisor. Her extension is 7424. Thank you for your consideration to support the efforts of RBCC and the precious residents of Berks Heim. God bless you!!!
